In 2009 Captain Richard Phillips was on the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama when it was hijacked by Somali pirates. It became the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.
Is The Plot Interesting?
The plot could have been improved upon by cutting out a few sections from the middle half as I thought it was too long and dragged on slightly but other than that I really enjoyed the story.
Is The Acting Good?
Tom Hanks had me in tears by the end of the movie. There’s one scene that sticks in my mind, it happens near the end of the movie, where Tom Hanks literally left me speechless. Barkhad Abdi is also good as the leader of the hijacking.
Is The Directing Good?
I think Paul Greengrass’ directing style suited the movie enough that it just about worked but I’m not going to say that I was overly impressed by the directing because, in truth, I wasn’t.
Is The Cinematography Good?
The cinematography is really good in Captain Phillips. It captures the danger and scale of the hijacking perfectly. It also adds a lot of emotional depth to the story where the script couldn’t.
Is It Worth Watching?
My only real problem with Captain Phillips was its slow pace in the middle of the movie but it picks right back up near the end. I thought the performances were great, especially Tom Hanks. You should definitely go and see Captain Phillips!
I’m the captain now.
